Business insights provider Nielsen acquires Indian analytics firm

Business intelligence provider Nielsen (NYSE:NLSN) has acquired Indian niche data analytics firm Indicus Analytics.

Indicus mines custom economic insights using analytics and data products. It provides information about the economy and consumers at extremely granular levels – specific to city, district, and neighborhood. Within this, the information is further segmented into income groups.

The firm was founded in 2000 by Dr Laveesh Bhandari, who holds a PhD in economics from Boston University and has taught economics there and at IIT, Delhi. Indicus’ methodologies include patent-pending algorithms that are capable of distilling insights from the data. These insights are valuable for decision-making. Indicus clients include ministries, policy groups, companies, and consultants.

In a statement announcing the move, Piyush Mathur, president for Nielsen India, says:

With the acquisition of Indicus Analytics, Nielsen will add capabilities for macro and microeconomic research and analytics with relevance for both public and private sectors.

The two firms together will develop “new services to provide solutions that will deliver insights to understand Indian economic activity by micro geography, enable demand forecasting for various product and service categories, and understand consumer segments by income, education, health, infrastructure and other micro parameters,” the statement adds.

The financial terms of the Indicus acquisition have not been disclosed.

Headquartered in the US and the Netherlands, Nielsen has a foothold in 100 countries. Through Nielsen, Indicus will now have access to a wider clientele. “We see the acquisition by Nielsen as the next stage of our growth. We can now look forward to expanding our premier services and products not just in India but globally as well,” Dr Bhandari says.

Though the flow of venture capital into Indian technology startups has picked up momentum in the last four years, mergers and acquisitions have been few and far between. Seen in that context, the acquisition of Indicus will enthuse investors looking for opportunities in India – especially in the data analytics space where Indian tech talent comes into play.

In July, big data analytics innovator Mu Sigma, one of the most successful Indian tech startups with a billion-dollar valuation, acquired Singapore-based social media analytics firm Webfluenz.

Chinese tech giant Tencent announced on Wednesday that it will make a big leap into the movie industry

Chinese tech giant Tencent announced on Wednesday that it will make a big leap into the movie industry with the establishment of a new division dedicated to film production.

According to China’s Caixin (hat-tip Forbes), the new division will make use of Tencent’s existing intellectual property from its gaming and comics divisions. Among the seven films that Tencent claims are currently in pre-production, four of them originate from one of the company’s video games. It’s also working on an adaptation of Mo Yan’s novella “Treasure Map.” Tencent COO Ren Yuxing said in a statement that the company aims to merge content across its numerous branches, while creating a movie viewing experience that integrates both the online and offline worlds.

Tencent isn’t the only Chinese tech giant to dive into original film production. Back in March, Alibaba acquired ChinaVision Media Group for US$804 million, one of the producers of the 2013 adaptation of Journey to the West. The company later changed its name to Alibaba Pictures Group. Baidu’s iQiyi also opened an in-house production studio in July.

Images and specifications of the SM-A500 have surfaced in Chinese regulatory docs

Images and specifications of the SM-A500 have surfaced in Chinese regulatory docs.

The SM-A500 is reportedly one of Samsung’s new “A series” of metallic phones that combine sleek design with mid-range specifications, along the SM-A300 and SM-A700. According to Sam Mobile’s sources, the SM-A500 will actually feature a full metal body, and not just an aluminum frame like the Galaxy Alpha and the Note 4.

Now the SM-A500 has been spotted in the database of TENAA, China’s telecom overseer. The listing includes several images showing a thin device with a rather typical Samsung design, but it’s not clear from the low-resolution pictures what the phone is made of. One distinctive feature revealed in the images is the speaker grille, which is positioned near the camera and has a metallic mesh design.

The listing mentions some specifications as well: the phone will be 139.3 x 69.7 x 6.7 mm (same thickness as the Alpha) and weigh just 126 grams. There will be LTE, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP frontal one, a quad-core 1.2GHz processor (likely Snapdragon 400), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and the previously reported 5-inch HD screen.

The specs confirm our impression that the SM-A500 is a mid-ranger that’s meant to impress through good looks, rather than a beefy spec sheet. It will be interesting to see Samsung’s pricing strategy in this respect.

The new A series is said to launch this quarter, which means we could see an official announcement from Samsung any time now. Interested?

Indonesia’s online education space just got another boost of confidence today as Kelase

Indonesia’s online education space just got another boost of confidence today as Kelase, a private social network for education, received an undisclosed amount seed funding from PT Insights Investments, a financial and investment firm in Indonesia. The money will be used for Kelase’s product development, recruitment, and system maintenance.

Kelase rolled out its trial version on June 2014. The startup allows education institutions to have their own social networks. Teachers and students can store and share numerous files on Kelase including education videos, e-books, and academic calendars – some of which Kelase itself provides.

Kelase users can also link up with other members from external institutions on the platform. They all can sign up for Kelase’s education communities which offers online classes on various topics. However, only institutions and members of those institutions can apply for Kelase’s service. Individuals who have no affiliation with any registered entities won’t be able to sign up.

According to Kelase team, they now have 700 registered institutions using the product, over half of which they consider “active.” Currently, all of Kelase’s services remain free of charge. The team plans to monetize via premium features like online assessments and chat, online content like educational videos and ebooks, and sponsorships.

Kelase was created by Brimy Laksmana and Winastwan Gora. Both of them previously worked for Intel Indonesia for a few years until they decided that Indonesia needs an elearning platform that is easy to use, accessible on mobile devices, and engaging. The duo wants to provide a good learning environment for both teachers and students.

While there are a few startups that offer online learning courses in Indonesia, there isn’t yet a major player that offers a private learning social network like Kelase. Another education-related startup that recently received seed funding in Indonesia is RuangGuru 1, a marketplace for tutors.
